Chapter Eight "Steel!", summary
Sayvara was getting a major migraine... the last couple of days under the boiling sun had so far been a mess more severe than ever before. Willau going insane screaming she's seeing the Devourer; having to literary bust Anayas ribs to save her from... whever the hell that was that tried to take her; seeing the entire refugee camp just swallowed up by the desert... including a freckin' Djinn! It was just too much...
The trip back to the city had offered no rest. Barely managing to control that infernal air elemental enough to keep the ship afloat - or controlling Adjanah enough to keep her from venting her frustration all over Evelene - they had made a less-than-graceful landing in Stormreach. In fact they had completely wrecked the thing... much to the joy of said elemental that took the opportunity to disappear into the wind. And all this time Deridne, Lirandel's dragonshard kept talking to her... speaking of the end of the world and how Sayvara was now the guardian of the shard.
Sayara sneered at the thought. This looked to be the shortest lifetime guardianship ever. Stormreach was in just as bad shape as the refuge... everyone just frozen... waiting to be consumed. As they hurried through the streets to the Tower, they could only pray that they kin had not yet been afflicted. But these prayers stood unanswered as they found the gates wide open and the bloodbath was laid out for them. Everyone of their remaining brothers and sisters had been wiped from existance, leaving nothing but mutilated corpses. The disaster grinned at them as irrevocable fact.
Their only reamining hope lied with Lirandel. They rushed to the cold store to see that at least he was still there maybe, just maybe they could wake him up somehow. As their steps against the hard wood floor resounded in the tower's corrdors, the throbbing pain in Sayvara's head just grew. She could sense what they would meet...
An empty slab. Not even he was there. Robbed of everything. Their leader killed and now taken... their hopes quashed... looking at perishing with everyone else into the maw of the Devourer.
Adjanah screamed out her anguish... kicking hard at the slab where Lirandel had lain. While the others with desperate calm tried to reason their way out of the unreasonable Sayvara buried her face in her palms. The pain shot like sword through her with every heartbeat. Deridne constantly babbled to her. After finally gaining everything... a husband... a sister.. a family... something to live for, she would now lose it all to some unseen, uncaring, unfeeling monstrosity beyond the planes.
- NO!!!
Like so many times before she lets her raging fire inside flame up. The madness takes hold... guiding her. Only that for the first time ever, she sees clearly why it has to happen. There is method to the madness.
In two swift and powerful motions... she draws the blade from her back, her razor shard greatsword, and swings it over her head through the slab. The sound of the crash as the wood it splinters is enough to make everyone startle and look at her and her raging sister. Sayvara raises the sword above her again... her teeth bared... the shard is pulsing chaotically and furiously.
- Enough. You are not taking my family. Never ever again am I letting you take my FAMILY!
Looking them over she comes to the horrifying conclusion. They are all going to die... in just a short while. So if the Devourer won't be allowed to get them...
- ...I'll rather take them myself!
With a bloodcurling roar, she starts her rush towards them... bent on saving them from the maw the only way she can:
Kill them all...
