Western martial arts: longswords, daggers and greatswords

Think martial arts is all about pyjama-clad east asians with sticks of wood chained together or impossibly thin and slender katanas? Think again...

Aha ;) Some references to Talhoffer there.

Anybody ready the Medieval Fight book by Talhoffer? Great Read :D Especially the rituals around a man fighting a woman...

For those who don't know, the 'Fight Book' was written by Hans Talhoffer in the 15th Century. It was *the* instruction manual on Medieval Combat. Full of funny pictures, for all kinds of weapons and dueling, from the 'Long Sword', to 'Wrestling', to 'One on Two', all the way up to 'Fight on Horseback against the Crossbow'!

My favourite chapter has to be 'Fight between a Man and a Woman'.

:D Well, rules were...

The man must stand in a pit up to his waist, armed with a wooden mace. The woman stands above him on the ground with a four or five-pound stone tied in her veil. *chuckles* ..Then It goes on to demonstrate exactly how Medieval maritial differences were discussed. Much better than today for sure :o

Wow thanks Sayv !

I loved watching this. I personally think western martial art is largely underestimated and neglected , with all the over glorification of Japanese and Chinese martial arts.

Perhaps because most of it is lost in time , and only left to speculation.

It is truly fine to see there are people that are trying to reinvent/rediscover it
