About Daringfoot family

Postby Archibold » Fri May 18, 2007 3:49 pm

The Daringfoot (or Daringfeet) family of Buckland is a peticular case.

Its unfortunate omittion from writings of one Bilbo Baggins was in my opinion an unforgettable injustice. But it may aswell be, for Daringfoots never really received a well deserved recognition of Hobbit folk. Well, no positive recognition that is. The only reason Daringfoot family was not openly called foolish and unpredictable is for many good deeds they done
for the benefit of Shire. And yet even now hobbits would say when judging something to be unreasonable risk : "It is something only Daringfoot will do." or worse "Not even Daringfoot will do that!"

The first mentioning and origin of "Daringfoot" family name dates to the
time of colonization of Shire in year 1601 of the Third Age. When brothers
Marcho and Blanco first crossed the river Brandywine followed by many Hobbits. It was told that although Marcho and Blanco dared to swim the river, they didnt dare to enter it, until someone put his feet in to check if water is cold. The brave Hobbit that dared the river and dipped his foot in , was a forefather of since called "Daringfoot" family.

Yet the most notable name of Daringfoot family would surely be one of
Willibald "The sword wielder" Daringfoot. Close companion of Bandobras "Bullroarer" Took. And well known for his part at the Battle of Greenfields
in which he cut down hordes of goblin minions , protecting his friend "Bullroarer" while he fought the evil Golfimbul. The unusual fighting style and use of sword instead of club or mace is perhaps the reason why Willibald is not often mentioned more than a snippet in tellings of Historian mr. Foxtail.

Over the years to this age Daringfoot mostly resided in Overhill and Buckland.
Being mainly keepers of the woods and lumberjacks. Notably seldom
respected because of their sizable enterprise in Old Forest. Often blamed for
owning few holes in deep reaches of the forest and undertaking
unnecessary risk by mining, hunting and chopping old forest resources -
thus "infuriating the forest" (??)

Some of members of the family also took upon so called "adventuring"
in human and dwarven lands.Which brought even more frowns
and ill respect in the Hobbit public. But it was never a mater
of very open discussion , since none of the Hobbits could
undermine the great contributions Daringfoots brought to the Shire in its
history.

Today Daringfoot family traveling in human lands could be recognised
by their family emblem representing a rooster of red or green color.

Finally, i will
"Do something only a Daringfoot will do!"
And secretly add this letter into Bilbo Baggins writings about the Shire

A small info about Archibolds family. Personally i love the part of how Daringfoots got their name..

Tooks were ready to swim over the Brandywine (Hobbits are notoriously afraid of water) but they didnt dare to enter if somebody didnt check if water is to cold !!!
